The Best Spyware Blockers for the Money or for No Money

Spyware blockers are imperative to keeping your computer operating smoothly, especially as the computer ages. They are also imperative in virus prevention even if, by themselves, they are not designed that way—but they do obstruct spyware that often comes by way of viruses or may have undetected viruses or malware embedded within.

To get the maximum spyware blockage, of course, you will probably have to think about spending money. For now, the best of the for-pay spyware blocking programs, based on a summary of spyware blockers reviews, is probably Spyware Doctor 2010 by PC Tools. The downside may be that it is a little too expensive for the overall package, and that just trying out the trial version will not remove malware, but for the average $30 price tag the malware detection and removal are thoroughgoing and accurate, and it has one of the simplest user interfaces of its breed. Also, the 2010 version is one of the first versions not to come strictly by way of bundling in other PC Tools programs.

If you have a little less in the budget to spend, Webroot Spy Sweeper at $25 is worth trying. The program has much improved detection capability that is getting positive reviews pretty much across the board, and the package includes free technical support and a gaming mode that keeps the program from disrupting your game playing or movie watching. However, there have been some reports of installation difficulty with the program’s newest version as well as complaints that it interferes with other security programs.

If your budget is a little more extensive and familiarity breeds attempt, instead of contempt, Norton’s Internet Security ($45) remains a popular choice and a viable one. Indeed, the price is usually the most frequent complaint about the suite, but the pluses may make it worth the price for you, anyway. The spyware protection remains among the top-rated of any program; the suite is very stingy when it comes to draining your computer’s system resources; and, the entire suite operates in tandem—including improved anti-virus and anti-spam applications—without interfering with each other, and with almost no system slowdowns, a frequent complaint with earlier Norton security suite programs.

For those who lack the money to spend but want an effective anti-spyware program, the best of the freeware programs is probably the freeware version of Malwarebytes. It is actually more effective and simpler to use than such popular offerings as Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware. Malwarebytes runs swiftly—the quick scan option takes only eight minutes and often less time, even if you happen to be running programs using a large volume of your computer’s resources. The most positive element is that Malwarebytes runs a heuristics-based engine that enables it to catch the distinction between actual spyware and malware and false positives, a distinction Spybot and Ad-Aware do not always make with Malwarebytes’ accuracy or consistency, though both the latter applications have been improved.

Malwarebytes also uses scan-on-demand for individual files and features a simple but attractive user interface including tabbed operating options. And installing Malwarebytes is probably faster than installing any of the other freeware options. The only drawback, but one you might expect, is that real-time protection is limited to the paid-for version of the package. Until you can afford to buy that package, Malwarebytes is probably the most responsive spyware blocker and fighter you can find when your budget dollars equal zero.
