How to Derive the Maximum Benefit from Aerating Your Lawn

In order to derive the most benefit from aerating your lawn, there are a few things that you should do. First of all, you should use a core aerator for aerating your lawn. Even though there are a lot of different lawn aerators out there, a core aerator is the best because it gives you the widest holes and allows room for your soil to expand.  In addition, it also gives the water somewhere to go. If you use a spike aerator, you’re going to be making holes, but you may also become back in your soil at the same time. Not an ideal situation.

The second thing you want doing aerate your lawn, is if your lawn is already hard, make sure to water it well the night before. This will help improve the penetration of your soil. Also, if your ground is already hard, make sure that you have all of your weights in your aerator so that it will sink deeper into the ground and give you better plugs. A lot of the depth of your aerator depends more on your soil than on the type of aerator you’re using.

The third thing that you should be able to do is to know when the right time is to aerate your lawn. Knowing when to aerate lawns, makes the job much better when you do it. For instance, most of the time you want to avoid aerating in the middle of summer. It will not be as effective as doing it in the spring or in the fall. Also, by doing it in the spring or in the fall, you will have a thicker and healthier turf when you need it the most. For instance, aerating your lawn in the spring can help prepare for a hot and dry summer.
